IDEO’s Bill Moggridge will present his book and his experience in interaction design at User Friendly 2009 in Shanghai, China on November 14.

More than ever, the challenges we face are global in nature. The call is now for us to find creative ways to cooperate, collaborate, and problem-solve for a better future.But how do we personalize these abstract problems? And how do we participate in shaping their solutions? It’s an enormous task for a single citizen, but a manageable undertaking when the efforts of individuals come together.

At IDEO, we feel this is an opportunity for design. “The Future” Present exhibition displays: experimentation, collaboration, evolution, and actionability. It is
a participatory space that invites visitors into our design process, which makes the abstract concrete and the seemingly unimaginable possible. It turns “making dreams come true” into simple action steps and allows people to engage with an approach we call design thinking.

IDEO’s “The Future Present” exhibition is at Midtown in Tokyo October 30 – November 3. The effort is part of Tokyo Design Week.

October 27-30, TEDMED celebrates conversations that tackle the big issues of health, from personal and public health care to devices, Hollywood, and hospitals. At the event, IDEO’s Tim Brown will ask, “What happens with a design thinking approach to health care?”

IDEO’s Sue Siddall will speak at Barcelona Design Week with Michael Thomson, founder of Design Connect and former president of the Bureau of European Design Associations. The event is running alongside two European Commission-funded initiatives, the Innovation Festival Barcelona and European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009.

Activities at the BCN Design Week will include a session on designing mobile telephone experiences, a conference on design thinking, and a design management awards ceremony.

IDEO’s Fred Dust will serve on a Panel at Aspen In New York: Capitalism and the Future November 3-4, sponsored by the The Aspen Institute Business and Society Program.

FORA.tv is featuring IDEO’s Know-How Talks online. The first of the batch is Scott Dadich talking about designing Wired magazine and developing a creative culture. IDEO’s Neil Stevenson and Sandy Speicher introduce the talk.

David Kelley will speak on innovations in education at the Nueva Gifted Learning Conference, held at the Nueva School in Hillsborough, California on October 16.

On October 10, IDEO’s Paul Bennett will speak at TEDx Dubai, asking, “What is YOUR dream for Dubai?” For a preview of Paul at TEDx Dubai, listen to his interview on Dubai’s “Nightline with James Piecowye.”

IDEO’s Doug Solomon will attend the Fifth Annual Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative hosted by former President Bill Clinton. The meeting, taking place September 22-25, will include attendees President Barack Obama, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Coca-Cola CEO Muhtar Kent, and other leading voices from the corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors. Doug will participate in the seminar “Becoming Embedded: Co-creating Business with the Community.”

IDEO’s Paul Bennett will speak on “Designing Tomorrow” at “You Are In Contro” in Reykjavik, hosted by the Icelandic Music Export. The conference will take place September 23-24 and address the latest developments in digital music, media, and the arts.

IDEO’s Gentry Underwood and Pixar’s Michael B. Johnson present “Social Networking Meet Social Engineering: Building software for the busy workplace” at PICNIC Amsterdam, September 23-24. The talk addresses Web 2.0 technologies in the workplace and the need for a human-centered approach.

On September 11, 2009, IDEO CTO Doug Solomon presented at the Chicago 2016 Summit on Sport and Sustainability where he shared the work behind a collaborate effort between IDEO and Digital Kitchen titled “Engaging New Audiences.”

The Olympic Movement has always continued to evolve its relevance in our diverse world, developing programs that promote the core Olympic values applied to culture, the environment and sport.  IDEO and Digital Kitchen explored this opportunity with Chicago 2016 to create a future vision for the Olympic Games.

IDEO’s Tim Brown and Acumen Fund’s Jacqueline Novogratz speak on “Putting the People First: Human Centered Poverty Alleviation.” The event will be held at Stanley Hall at the University of California in Berkeley on September 8 and is open to the public.

On September 1, IDEO’s Sally Madsen will be presenting at the Social Capital Markets conference for a panel titled “Disruptive innovation: Three successful approaches to scaling impact.” She will be representing the Ripple Effect project with Acumen Fund.

Patrice Martin and Jocelyn Wyatt will lead a workshop with SustainAbility on the “Future of Corporate Capitalism: Connecting Money with Meaning and the Leadership Imperative of Corporations” at the BeDo Intrapreneurs event.

On September 2, Doug Solomon speaks on the panel “ICT4 Who? Helping Specific Groups Using Tech for Impact.” Aaron Sklar and Tatyana Mamut will lead a session titled “Human Centered Evaluation.”

The Design for Giving Contest is motivating schools across India to reimagine the act of giving. Taking place from August 15th to Oct 15th, the contest involves more than 30,000 schools across India. School children will design and implement solutions to help people in need. The goal of this movement is to help children realize that they can “be the change” they want to see in the world.


The Design for Giving Contest is part of the “Joy of Giving” week and is organized by the Riverside School, Ahmedabad and GiveIndia. Knowledge partners include Stanford’s d.school and IDEO.
