Tim Brown and Joi Ito lead a conversation at the MIT Media Lab around design’s relationship with current challenges and platforms.

United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announces that the U.S. State Department will be working with the American Refugee Committee (ARC) and IDEO on the “Neighbors” campaign to raise awareness and funds for the relief effort in Somalia. Fred Dust, David Kelley, and Sandy Speicher spoke as part of this year’s Aspen Ideas Festival, held June 27-July 4 in Aspen, Colorado.

Fred and David shared the stage for “How Is Design Inspiring New Directions in Education and Our Society?,” and Sandy spoke on a panel titled, “How Do We Design the Learning Environments of the Future?”

Adam Vollmer and Judy Lee are the hosts of Design Squad Nation, a 10-part series of TV shows and accompanying online video blogs. They partner with kids around the world to make their dreams come true through engineering. Nathan Waterhouse spoke about the open innovation platform at CompostModern, an AIGA event that explores “fertile ground for designing a sustainable future. Treehugger, CNET, and Core77 wrote about their takes on the session.

After wrapping up a challenge that asked, “What global challenge do you think innovation leaders should work to solve right now?” on OpenIDEO, an open innovation platform, IDEO’s Nathan Waterhouse presented the findings to the i20, a group of global innovation leaders convened at the White House. The findings from the challenge helped to identify priorities and directions at the event that serves as a forum for discussion of innovation on a global scale.

IDEO and Hakuhodo’s Palette concept is on display at the 2010 Annual Design Review in New York. The exhibit, hosted by I.D. Magazine, is open to the public at the AIGA National Design Center until September 10. For more information, click here.

Communication design work for Bedsider and HCD Toolkit is currently on display at the Pasadena Museum of California Art’s Design Biennial. The exhibit is on until October 31, 2010.

IDEO’s Axel Unger will speak at “Innovation in Healthcare Delivery,” a one-day event held at London Business School. He will discuss The Role of Design in Service Innovation.

Gentry Underwood’s talk, “Beyond Ethnography: How the design of social software obscures observation and intervention,” will take place on July 8 from 4:00-5:00pm at PARC Forum in Palo Alto, CA.

On June 22, IDEO’s Doug Solomon will facilitate a session titled “Innovation Laboratory on Rebuilding Trust” at The New York Forum. Other Forum participants include Rupert Murdoch, Michael Bloomberg, and James Tisch.

On June 15, IDEO’s Fred Dust will participate in the Design Trust/MAS Garment District panel at the School of Visual Arts Theater in New York.  The panel will discuss the cultural, economic, and social contributions of creative communities, and explore how improved visibility of the activities within these neighborhoods can strengthen those creative industries and New York City.
