Message Wastebins Best known for its ergonomic-handled kitchen gadgets, OXO has expanded into a leading consumer products company with more than 800 products on the market. In an effort to further expand its portfolio and gain entry into new retail channels, OXO partnered with IDEO to develop a line of waste bins. During human factors research, IDEO spent time in people’s homes observing in-context behaviors and studying kitchen layouts to help inform bin geometry and design. From this work came three waste bin designs to suit different user behaviors and needs. The Angle Can was designed for people who don’t normally use a bin liner. It features an angled opening and backboard to better catch trash tossed in tight spaces’like under a desk or sink. The angled shape and a strategically placed handle allow the trash to be poured out as if from a spout. The Cover Can accommodates standard plastic shopping bags with a dual-layer design that hides the top edge of the bag and keeps it securely fastened in the bin with a thermoset sleeve. The cover of the bin easily slides on and off with a push-button latch and resists scratching. The Touch Bin is a high-end kitchen receptacle that uses a unique lid assembly to hide excess bag liner under a stainless steel apron. Special clips keep the bag from slipping out of place; a push-button spring-loaded mechanism allows for easy opening. The OXO Cover Can was featured in the New York Times Magazine, Fall 2006 design issue. http://www.ideo.com/work/wastebins
