Message Salad Spinner IDEO has worked with Zyliss USA to design a large range of kitchen tools. Each is the result of IDEO’s process of user observations, iterative prototyping, and engineering and design expertise. Zyliss’s new salad spinner updates a classic from its line, enhancing and improving its usability in a number of ways. The design team examined other salad spinners to discover opportunities for improvement during use, clean-up, and storage. The chef starts the basket spinning by pulling a cord attached to a large, comfortable handle. A new drive mechanism replaces the original, incorporating a freewheel system that allows the basket to coast and automatically retract its cord. Because it spins faster than other similar devices, an integrated disc brake efficiently stops the mechanism at the touch of a button. The result performs as well or better than their earlier model and the competitors’ offerings. The salad spinner’s lid is uniquely clear, giving the chef a better look at the drying process, and the lid is kept perfectly flat to allow for stacking and more efficient storage. Even cleaning is addressed, as the basket and bowl have no interior ribs to interfere with wiping. http://www.ideo.com/work/salad-spinner
