Message One-X IP Desktop Phones As IP Telephony becomes the preferred means of communication for many mid- to large-size businesses, the number of features designed to support workplace needs continues to multiply. Avaya, a leading provider of communications systems, applications, and services, came to IDEO to design a series of IP desktop phones with simpler user interfaces and updated product architecture. IDEO began by researching usage patterns of people in the US, Europe, and Asia, observing how people interact with desktop phones in business environments. They found that by organizing phone features along usage patterns, they could design IP phones that better served people’s distinct needs and contexts. With this concept as the basis for the product strategy, IDEO developed four phones, serving four different user needs: the Walkup, the Everyday, the Essential, and the Navigator. Each phone is equipped with a dynamic interface that provides contextual phone features based on the user’s role and activity, allowing the phones to be near-custom devices that provide optimized access to the capabilities most used within business environments. The vision for the phones’ industrial design was to create business-appropriate tools that visually reference their digital capabilities—the flat, bezel top of the interface panel alludes to the fact that these phones are more akin to computers than to traditional analog phones. Inset into the panel is an ergonomic, hi-fidelity handset, and a pared down series of buttons printed with recognizable, directive symbols. A two-way flip stand lends a unified appearance, free of messy cables. And, inspired by the changeable wallpaper on computer desktops are interchangeable faceplates of varying colors and materials, allowing the phones to be equally appropriate in high-end hotel lobby or busy warehouses. The One-X Desktop Edition phone, launched with Avaya’s 2006 World Cup sponsorship, marks a change in the way business users interact with their desktop phones by putting more power in the digital interface. Expandable, add-on button modules and interface upgrade options allow the terminal to grow alongside business needs without requiring costly full-system overhauls. http://www.ideo.com/work/one-x-ip-desktop-phones
