Message Creative Suite 3 Packaging Known for its business, creative, and mobile software, Adobe Systems has also been recognized as a leader in green business practices. Awarded a platinum certification in 2007 for their sustainable headquarters by the Green Building Council, Adobe sought recently to make a similar impact with their product offering. The company approached IDEO to create a holistic, sustainable packaging solution for their much anticipated Creative Suite 3 software. In response to Adobe’s needs, IDEO set out to create a solution with ‘low-fidelity materials and high-fidelity design’ that could be easily recycled or, alternately, inspire users to keep it for its convenience and high aesthetic value. Working closely with Adobe, the team began exploring materials, recycling center processes, and methods to ensure that the packaging had a sustainable lifecycle. In conjunction with Adobe’s sourcing team, IDEO chose a clay-coated newsback soft cardboard, sourced from sustainably managed forests. Constrained by the size of the software DVD case, IDEO examined ways to shrink the packaging, preventing shipments of half-filled software boxes. The final design is both beautiful and efficient to produce, incorporating a die-cut production method and folding inserts to minimize the use of glue. Appearing to be wrapped in paper, the design also uses color inserts to denote specific software, enabling the packaging to be used across several software platforms and reduce the number of SKUs used during production. Inside the box, IDEO reduced the size and changed the orientation of the manual to match the size of the DVD case, resulting in a booklet that could be set in front of a keyboard and easily flipped through.
